Holidays 1: The Jewish Calendar

Jewish life is communal, meaning that it’s about what we do together. That includes Jewish holidays and other celebrations.

Let’s learn about the Jewish calendar. It is different from the non-Jewish (secular) calendar.

Read Jewish Calendar: Solar and Lunar – How the Hebrew Calendar Works.

Next, read Months of the Jewish Year.

Homework (Choose One Activity)

  • Use Google to figure out the Hebrew date of your birthday and the Hebrew date of three family or friends’ birthdays.
  • Pick a Hebrew month this year that you think will have the most fun observances/events in it. Write an email to someone about why you like this month, how the Hebrew dates line up with the secular calendar, and what they can expect will happen in that month
